Tax policy is the heartbeat of public policy. Without adequate revenue, governments cannot exercise their proper function. Yet tax policy in Louisiana remains at the storm center of conflicting interests and ideologies: while many believe that taxes are too high, poor people pay a greater percentage of their incomes in taxes than the rich, thanks in part to overly generous tax breaks to wealthy corporations and the second-highest combined sales tax rate in the nation. Our team seeks to combine idealism and realism by studying these issues in-depth, taking positions on behalf of the underserved, and engaging with legislators to promote constructive change.
